Hotel B Cozumel is convinced that the Hotel Industry can be an engine of social change, inviting low-income artisans and producers to a new business model.
Our Hotel in Cozumel offers development opportunities for potential entrepreneurs. First, we incorporate local products among our supplies. Second, the hotel decor is mainly made in different parts of Mexico and everything is in sale with the only purpose of contributing with the development of small artisans and producers. Bohemia, our workshop, offers a space for collaborative projects between independent artisans, designers and contemporary artists, adding value to the art products and extending their market.
The final gold is to extend the low-income producers and artisans market and support their business. The first phase will focus on making Hotel B Cozumel a successful inclusive business model, so it can be replied for other Cozumel Hotels. A second phase will focus in strengthen independent artisans and producer that we work with, offering advice and training, strengthening their products, looking for new markets in our country and being with them in the exporting process. This requires alliances with other organizations, something we’re already doing.
The main issue we’re trying to solve is the absence of economic opportunities for low income people. Nowadays Mexico has the population bonus, expected to boost the economy, development and innovation.
However, the statistics show otherwise:
|Insufficient job creation||- Between 800,000 and 1,000,000 of individuals join the labor force each year, but the job creation has been negative.- 11% of the labor force is in critical situations.|
|Informal employment||- 29% of the Mexican labor force is in the informal sector.|
|Migration||- From 2004 to 2010 between 300,000 and 500,000 Mexicans crossed the United States border every year.|
Individuals with limited opportunities usually look for alternatives. The migrations and racketeering are the common alternatives in the present, which has brought upon an enormous social economic charge.
The debate over the migrations has focused on remittances, while the debate on violence has focused on the racketeering. They require broader perspectives that focused on the causes of these phenomena: the lack of economic opportunities. They require solid strategies to create good jobs in competitive sectors, and to incorporate small farmers and improve their economic status. The last one is the approach of the social strategy of Hotel B Cozumel.
